FAILED I HAVE,
IN EXILE I MUST GO
2020 - 2023
FAILED I HAVE, IN EXILE I MUST GO is an immersive installation that deals with the hikikomori phenomenon - initially Japanese, now international - which leads some people, often just about to enter the workforce, to confine themselves to their homes for months or years.
The installation invites us to enter a photographic landscape by threading our way through strips of kozo paper (Japanese paper used to make shoji, traditional sliding doors), then to discover first-hand testimonies via screens, the only interfaces that allow them to remain in contact with the world. We discover sensitive portraits revealing the causes and consequences of the syndrome.
In doing so, we can question the pressure that certain social spheres exert on individuals.
